President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump tested positive for coronavirus, tweeted the president on Friday, after his first presidential debate against Joe Biden. The president’s COVID-test result comes months after playing down the deadly outbreak that has killed already killed above 207,000 people in the United States. “We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately,” tweeted Trump as he made the announcement on the social media platform.
Trump’s positive test result is likely to pose immediate difficulties for the future of his campaign against former Vice President Joe Biden. Reuters reported that Trump had been rigorously travelling across the country in recent weeks, holding rallies with thousands of people in the run-up to the upcoming presidential elections, despite the warnings from public health professionals against conducting events with large crowds.
Tonight, @FLOTUS and I tested positive for COVID-19. We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately. We will get through this TOGETHER!

Moreover, Trump, who is 74, falls in the age group that has the highest risks of acquiring serious complications from the disease. Trump had last appeared in public for a fundraising trip to New Jersey and returned on Thursday afternoon to the White House. He didn’t appear to have been infected with the virus as he walked into his residence amid reporters.
Donald Trump has been resistant to permitting his health details to be made public, which raises questions about his overall condition as he is now infected. He had also travelled to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in November without any prior announcement which also leads to speculations that he had an undisclosed medical ailment. However, the White House insisted that the president simply underwent a regular health check-up, without revealing the details of the test reports.
