US Baltimore Explosion: Several Houses Gutted, 1 Dead

US Baltimore Explosion: A massive explosion took place tearing through a Baltimore neighbourhood. The huge explosion gutted several houses killing at least one person and three others were grievously injured. There were at least five others including children trapped in the blast site, according to the firefighters.

According to reports in the Baltimore Sun, it was a natural gas explosion. The cause of the blast is yet unknown, as per the reports in the leading media website, which quoted the fire department. The images from the site showed a section of row houses rubbled strewn about as rescue workers climb over a pile of debris, searching for victims.

All the patients who were in critical condition were rescued by firefighters, the Baltimore Firefighter IAFF Local 734 share the details on Twitter. “Many houses exploded at least five people were trapped including some children,” the union said.

In a separate post, the union said, “The rescue team is communicating with one person who is believed to be trapped. #BCFDSRO Special Rescue Operation Team is putting all the efforts to reach out to the person. One person has been found dead on spot”. There were officials from Baltimore Gas and Electric Company and the Baltimore Office of Emergency Management was at the spot, as reported by the Sun.

Gas company spokesperson Richard Yost told the Sun, “We are closely monitoring the scene and working closely with the fire department to avoid any untoward situation crews are working to turn off the gas to the building in the immediate area. Once the gas line is closed we will be able to safely assess the situation including inspections of BGE equipment.”
