The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a warning on Thursday. The forecasting gave the reports that the deep depression is taking place over the southwest Bay of Bengal. This is going to intensify into Cyclone Fengal within the next 12 hours. This cyclone is predicted to hit the northern parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts. Apart from this the landfall is expected between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram on the morning of November 30. Furthermore winds are anticipated to reach speeds of 50-70 km/h. As cyclone Fengal intensifies over Bay of Bengal. It is expected to bring heavy rain and winds to Tamil Nadu and Puducherry by November 30, thus affecting schools, flights, and maritime safety.

The IMD reported that the deep depression has remained stationary for the last several hours. Moving north-north westward, it is expected to skirt the Sri Lankan coast before making landfall along the northern Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts. The cyclone’s winds are likely to peak at 60-70 km/h. Moreover in its latest update, the IMD said the deep depression remained stationary for the past six hours near latitude 9.0-degree North and longitude 82.1-degree East. It is about 100 km east-northeast of Trincomalee.
While speaking to news agency ANI. S. Kumar, who is a duty officer at the Visakhapatnam Cyclone Warning Centre, explained that the system is currently 550 km southeast of Chennai, 370 km southeast of Karaikal, and 470 km southeast of Puducherry. Whereas the rainfall is already being felt across the region and more is expected over the next few days, this includes the coastal part of Andhra Pradesh.

The heavy rains from the developing cyclone have already begun to affect the region. As a precautionary measure, schools and colleges in Puducherry were closed. Whereas the local authorities are on high alert as the weather is forecasted to worsen in upcoming hours. Moreover Puducherry’s Education Minister Arumugam Namassivayam has already confirmed the authorities are on a high alert.
Over the past 24 hours, Puducherry recorded 7.5 cm of rainfall. While Karaikal saw 9.5 cm. For this reason to ensure public safety, the Puducherry government has activated a 24X7 control room. Secondly this control centre is relocating residents from low-lying areas to relief camps.
IMD forecasts heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next two days in Puducherry and Karaikal, with Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, and Cuddalore also expected to see significant downpours. Additionally, Chennai, Tiruvallur, and surrounding districts are on alert for heavy rainfall in isolated locations.

For this reason, the major airline of IndiGo announced on Wednesday night that flights to and from several Tamil Nadu airports, including Chennai, Tuticorin, Madurai, Tiruchirappalli, and Salem, will continue to be impacted by adverse weather. Also the airline has urged its passengers to check flight updates regularly and stay prepared for any potential delays.

As the depression moves closer to the Tamil Nadu coast. The Indian Coast Guard has increased its efforts to ensure maritime safety as well. They have also issued warnings to fishing boats, and fishermen. The higher authorities have advised them to return to port to avoid the storm.
