Mauritius Honors PM Modi With Highest National Award

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a two-day bilateral visit to Mauritius. During this visit, the country’s Prime Minister, Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam, announced that PM Modi would be awarded the prestigious “Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean.” This is the highest national honor of Mauritius. Strengthening India-Mauritius Relations

PM Modi’s visit underscores the growing partnership between India and Mauritius. He is in the island nation at the invitation of Prime Minister Ramgoolam. On the first day of his visit, Modi made a significant gesture by announcing that both Dr. Ramgoolam and his wife, Veena Ramgoolam, would be granted Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cards. This decision highlights India’s commitment to strengthening ties with its diaspora and enhancing its bilateral relations with Mauritius.

Historic OCI Card Announcement

In a major step, India has extended the eligibility for OCI cards to Mauritian nationals with Indian ancestry, up to seven generations. This expansion of OCI eligibility is a key move to further integrate the Indian diaspora in Mauritius with their roots in India. Mauritius has a significant Indian community, with 22,188 Indian nationals and 13,198 OCI cardholders.

Upcoming Initiatives And Cooperation

On March 12, PM Modi is expected to sign at least eight Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with Mauritius. These MoUs will cover important areas like community development projects, maritime security, and cultural exchange. In addition, Modi will inaugurate 23 India-funded projects during his visit. He is also likely to announce new initiatives aimed at strengthening the cooperation between the two nations.

In his departure statement, Modi spoke about the deep-rooted historical, geographical, and cultural connections between India and Mauritius. He emphasized that the island is close to maritime neighbor and a vital partner in the Indian Ocean region. PM Modi also highlighted the mutual trust between the two countries and their shared belief in democracy. He added that the celebration of diversity and the strong people-to-people ties are sources of pride for both nations.

PM Modi’s visit to Mauritius marks a significant milestone in the ongoing relationship between the two countries. Through initiatives like the OCI card expansion and cooperation in key sectors, the visit further strengthens the bonds of friendship and partnership between India and Mauritius.
