Jammu and Kashmir tensions: In a historic move, the Rajya Sabha has passed the Bill for splitting of Jammu and Kashmir into two separate Union Territories. Union Home Minister on Monday announced that the government has decided to scrap the Article 370 of Jammu and Kashmir after which the upper house of the parliament voted for the decision. Article 370 gives special status to the state of Jammu and Kashmir, which will now be gone. The bill is being table in Lok Sabha today, August 6, 2019 and if approved it will lead to the bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir into two separate Union territories, with legislature while Ladakh will not have any legislature.
Soon after the announcement made by Shah, there was a massive uproar in the Rajya Sabha. Opposition MP’s have protested against the bill while prominent politicians of Jammu and Kashmir – Mehbooba Mufti, Omar Abdullah and Sajjad are under house arrest. Omar’s Tweet on his official handle said that the Indian government’s unilateral decision on scrapping of the Article 370 is a total betrayal of trust and this will have far-reaching and dangerous consequences.
The country’s major political parties such as Shiv Sena, AAP, YSRCP, BPF Assam, AIDMK, BJD, BSP have supported the Bill. Shiv Sena has also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for this historic Kashmir move. Opposition parties like Congress, DMK and TMC has strongly opposed the bill. Moreover, in amid tensions in Jammu and Kashmir valley, the Indian Army and Indian Air Force have been put on high alert after the Government of India announced repeal of Article 370 and other decisions.
