The Maha Kumbh 2025 commenced with an awe-inspiring display of devotion and spirituality in Prayagraj on Monday. The air was thick with fog, and the cold was intense as over 60 lakh pilgrims took a holy dip in the Sangam, the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers. This moment marked the beginning of the world’s largest religious gathering, which will last for 45 days.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the occasion as a special day for those who cherish India’s spiritual heritage. He emphasized that the event embodied India’s timeless values, faith, and culture. As the faithful braved the freezing waters, they sought ‘moksha’ (salvation) and believed the holy dip would cleanse their sins.
More than 40 crore people are expected to attend the Maha Kumbh over the next six weeks. The gathering is particularly significant as the celestial alignments are believed to occur once in 144 years. This rare event has made the pilgrimage even more auspicious.
Devotees, many chanting “Jai Ganga Maiyya” and “Har Har Mahadev,” moved in groups toward the holy waters. Among the crowd were international visitors, including YouTubers from South Korea and a team from Japan, capturing the grandeur of the event.
The Maha Kumbh is a perfect blend of spirituality, tradition, and modern-day technology. While seers and pilgrims from across the globe participate, the government has ensured that technology aids the event’s organization. Digital tourist maps and AI-powered security systems have been set up to monitor safety and cleanliness at the Mela grounds.
