Assam: Beef Banned In Hotels, Restaurants, Public Spaces

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that the state government has decided to impose a ban on beef. The CM has advised a ban on the serving and consumption of beef in restaurants, hotels, and public places. This decision was made during a cabinet meeting. This decision aims to strengthen the existing laws surrounding beef consumption. While there were already restrictions in place, but there was no specific ban on serving beef in public spaces, restaurants, or during social events.

The CM elaborated, stating that the new regulation would prevent beef from being served in any hotel, restaurant, or public gathering throughout the state. He also pointed out that while a previous directive had prohibited beef consumption near temples. This new decision expands the ban to all public and community spaces in Assam. Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed in a statement saying, “From today, beef consumption in public places, restaurants, and hotels will be completely banned.”

Assam Government Also Has Plans For Constructing A ₹25,000 Crore Expressway

In addition to the beef ban, the Assam CM also mentioned that the state cabinet, which he attended virtually from Delhi, would approve plans to widen the road linking Guwahati’s Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi airport to the city from a four-lane to a six-lane highway. Furthermore, he outlined that the government also has plans to construct a ₹25,000 crore expressway. This expressway is going to connect Guwahati to Silchar via Meghalaya.

On a related note to the beef ban. Assam’s Minister Pijush Hazarika issued a provocative statement. He wrote a statement challenging the Congress party to either support the beef ban or leave for Pakistan. His remarks were posted on the social media platform X.

A cabinet expansion is also scheduled for December 7. During this new ministers are set to take oath in the office.
