Sikkim’s population has seen a noticeable decline, dropping to 6.38 lakh from 6.82 lakh in 2011. This demographic shift has raised concerns, prompting the state government to take action. Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang highlighted the urgency of addressing the issue during the 13th Foundation Day celebrations of the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM). He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to tackling the shrinking population while maintaining environmental sustainability.

A Unique Solution: 108 Trees for Every Newborn

To combat this issue, CM Tamang introduced the “Mero Rukh Mero Santati” program. The initiative aims to plant 108 trees for every newborn, creating a symbolic connection between the next generation and the environment. The program highlights the state’s efforts to preserve ecological balance while addressing the population challenge. It’s an innovative approach that fosters environmental responsibility while acknowledging demographic changes.

The population of Sikkim has decreased over the past few years. The Certificate of Identification (COI) holders in the state have also seen a reduction, raising concerns about the state’s future demographic structure. CM Tamang emphasized that this issue cannot be overlooked and requires urgent solutions to prevent any adverse impacts on the state’s economy and society.

Mizoram’s Population Growth Plans

Meanwhile, in Mizoram, another northeastern state, Chief Minister Lalduhoma also raised concerns about the region’s population. At the Zofest 2024, he pointed out that Mizoram has low population density and ample land to accommodate more people. He stressed the need for encouraging population growth, especially among the Zofate community. Lalduhoma’s administration is considering offering incentives for families with more than three children to promote larger families.

Balancing Growth And Sustainability

Both Sikkim and Mizoram’s efforts underscore a delicate balance between population growth and environmental sustainability. While Mizoram looks to expand its population, Sikkim aims to encourage ecological responsibility through its tree-planting initiative. The contrast between the two approaches highlights the different ways states are tackling demographic challenges, ensuring that their unique priorities and resources are considered.

Sikkim’s “Mero Rukh Mero Santati” program is a creative solution to a growing concern about population decline. By connecting families with nature, the initiative provides a sustainable way to address demographic changes. As population challenges continue to shape the future of states, these innovative solutions offer new hope for balancing growth with environmental responsibility.
