Assam Unveils Rs 1 Lakh Crore Development Plan To Become A Regional Economic Hub

Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has unveiled an ambitious development plan worth Rs 1 lakh crore. This aims to transform Assam into a regional economic hub. With a focus on infrastructure, industrial growth, and global investment, Sarma’s vision promises to enhance Assam’s potential as a strategic gateway to Southeast Asia.

Building Stronger Regional Connectivity

A key aspect of the development plan is improving Assam’s regional connectivity. CM Sarma outlined several major infrastructure projects that will strengthen the state’s position in cross-border trade. The plan includes the construction of three new bridges over the Brahmaputra River, which will significantly ease travel and transportation.

In addition, a satellite city will be developed near Guwahati in collaboration with Singapore, further boosting urban development. A new railway connection between Guwahati and Gelephu, Bhutan, is also part of the plan, enhancing trade relations between India and Bhutan while improving access to international markets.

Alongside infrastructure, Sarma is keen to accelerate industrial growth in Assam. The state has already seen impressive industrial growth at a rate of 12.5%. To sustain this momentum, the Chief Minister announced a dedicated Rs 25,000 crore fund aimed at pushing industrial development.

Assam is also focusing on green energy adoption, with initiatives like the Tata semiconductor plant powered entirely by renewable energy. This move aligns with global trends towards sustainability and positions Assam as a future-ready hub for industries committed to eco-friendly practices.

The state government is keen to promote Assam as an attractive destination for international investors. To further this agenda, the Advantage Assam Summit 2.0, scheduled for February, will serve as a key platform to engage global investors and attract foreign direct investment.
