Assam Tourists Rescued From Snowbound North Sikkim: A Close Call Amid Heavy Snowfall

Six tourists from Assam had a narrow escape after being trapped in heavy snowfall and hazardous road conditions in North Sikkim. The group, traveling on motorcycles, was stranded near Yakshe. It was about 10 kilometers from Lachung in the Mangan district, late on Sunday night. The situation quickly turned dire as intense snowfall and black ice on the roads left them unable to continue their journey.

The tourists had been enjoying their trip to the picturesque region of Sikkim. But later they found themselves in a perilous situation when the storm intensified. As the weather worsened, the group became stuck, unable to move forward or safely return. The presence of black ice on the slippery roads made it almost impossible for their motorcycles to navigate.

Realizing the severity of the situation, local authorities launched an immediate rescue operation. The Sikkim Police, along with the assistance of local residents, worked tirelessly throughout the night. After that the police successfully stranded tourists and brought back the tourists saftly. Despite the freezing temperatures and worsening conditions, the combined efforts of the police and residents ensured that the group was safely rescued by Monday morning.

Once the tourists were safely evacuated, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), quickly mobilized  to clear the road to Yumthang Valley. By Monday morning, the road was reopened, allowing the resumption of travel to the valley, a popular tourist destination known for its scenic beauty and hot springs.
