Meghalaya Launches M-Tab Initiative to Empower Students With Digital Learning

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, along with Speaker Thomas A. Sangma, launched the distribution of M-Tabs (learning tablets) in West Garo Hills on Tuesday. The ceremony was held at the District Auditorium in Tura. This initiative is part of the Chief Minister’s Student Digital Learning Scheme, aimed at enhancing e-Education across the state.

The M-Tabs come pre-loaded with essential resources for Higher Secondary exams. These include study materials, mock question papers, past exam papers, and solved answers. The tablets also feature high-quality audio, video, animations, and 3D graphics, making learning more interactive and engaging.

Step Towards Empowering Students In Meghalaya

During the event, CM Conrad K. Sangma emphasized the role of technology in education. He stated that the M-Tab is not just a device but a powerful tool to empower Meghalaya’s youth. “We want to ensure our youth have access to quality education to excel in exams,” he said.

He added that the initiative shows the government’s commitment to the students, sending a message: “We care about you and we trust you.” The CM highlighted that digital learning, through visual and audio content, makes education more accessible and enjoyable.

Sangma noted that rapidly advancing technology is reshaping education. He stressed the importance of incorporating technology at the grassroots level, particularly through smart classrooms and digital learning. “Technology is an enabler that makes learning easier,” he said.

The Chief Minister also spoke about the government’s efforts to develop the IT sector. Projects such as IT parks in Shillong and Tura, along with optical fiber networks, are being prioritized. “We plan to complete these projects in the next two years, ensuring every school has access to optical fibers,” he said.

Success Of IT Parks And Youth Innovation

The CM also shared the success of Shillong’s IT park, which serves clients from the US and Europe. Meghalaya’s youth are developing AI-driven solutions for industries, including predicting crop diseases, rainfall patterns, and plant growth. “Our youth are helping industries in the US and Europe while working from Meghalaya,” Sangma said, emphasizing the transformation taking place in the state.

M-Tab Distribution Across Meghalaya

Since the program’s launch in 2021, nearly 1 lakh M-Tabs have been distributed to Class XI students. In the 2023-24 academic year, 30,480 students benefited from the scheme. On Tuesday, around 3,000 M-Tabs were distributed to over 400 students from 21 higher secondary schools in West Garo Hills.

In addition, nearly 5,700 teachers from higher secondary schools across the state will also receive M-Tabs to support e-learning and assessments.

Vidya Samiksha Kendra App For Teachers

The Department of Information and Technology has developed the Vidya Samiksha Kendra app. This learning management app will help teachers track and assess students’ learning progress, further enhancing the digital education experience in Meghalaya.

The M-Tab initiative is a game-changer for education in Meghalaya. By integrating technology into the learning process, the government is ensuring that students have access to better educational resources. This effort promises to shape the future of Meghalaya’s youth, making them more tech-savvy and prepared for the challenges ahead.
