Nagasaki Day 2020: The city of Nagasaki observed its 75th year of the atomic bombings of the city with a message to the world to abandon the nuclear arms race.
Nagasaki was the second city after Hiroshima which was bombed by the US with its second lethal Atomic Bomb – The Fat Man dropped by the US warplane – Enola Gay. The very next moment, the inferno left an estimated 70,000 dead and an other 70,000 died due to radiation-related diseases.
The United States, which targeted this beautiful city which was a major shipbuilding centre in Japan has remained a testimony of the aftershocks and horrors with its survivors only praying that it never happens to the younger generation of this day.

The city Mayor, Tomihisa Taue stated that ‘the message of real horrors of the bombings has not yet been conveyed universally around the world despite the survivors who have recounted their horrific experience’ while the Under Secretary to the UN, Izumi Nakamistu, read the message shred by the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres which stated that the prospects of the usage of nuclear weapons with a miscalculation or intentionally are quite dangerous. The historic progress in nuclear disarmament is in Jeopardy’.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe affirmed that Japan would lead the way and work toward urging the world community to realize the importance of a nuclear-free world.

One of the survivors’ recount ‘Suddenly everything turned bright orange and that he could not withstand the blaze and laid down. The next things he was were glasses and rubbles just blown away everywhere in a split of a moment’.
Many survivors called for world peace with nuclear arms race and tensions around the world is still a reality.
