Joyce Echaquan, a Canadian Indigenous woman livestreams a video of her being abused by hospital staffers moments before her death sparking widespread protests across the country.

Moments before dying, a Canadian indigenous woman filmed herself and livestreamed on Facebook as she was being abused by the hospital staff. The video has sparked widespread protests across the country.
In the video, the staffers can be heard hurl abuses in French. A nurse is heard saying “You made bad life choices dear”. An other called her “stupid as hell”. A third voice was heard saying “She is good for s*x”.
Joyce Echquan, a member of Atikamekv tribe and a mother of 7 got admitted to Joilotte Hospital in Qubec complaining of stomach pain only two days before her death on Monday.
Moments before her death, she livestreamed a video on Facebook in which the hospital staff can be heard abusing at her as she was heard screaming in intolerable pain and apathy.
Echquan’s family in their GoFund page has stated that she died as she was given too much of morphine. Protests have erupted after the video went viral across the country.

Reacting to this horrific incident, Qubec premier, Francouis Legault toold the media ‘Like all qubecers, he was shocked to learn the kind of racism she was subjected to’. He further added that a provincial level task force has been assigned to launch an investigation and with immediate effect, a nurse has been fired.
Speaking to Radio Canada, Carol Dube, Echaquan’s husband told ‘he has 7 children who no longer has a mother’. The death of Echaquan comes amidst a national concern of the way the indigenous people have been treated in Canada who make up 5 % of 37 million Canadians.
In June, a video of an indigenous Canadian being ‘arrested forcefully’ by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police over an expired license case was criticized by the Canadian Prime minister, Justin Trudeau.
According to Claudette Dumont-Smith, Director of Native Women’s Association o Canada, Echaquan’s death is not an isolated incident and many such do happen in hospitals and many donot have phones to report such incidents.
More ‘Justice For Joyce’ protests have been organized across the country which is expected to draw people in thousands of attendees.
