Why Assam Has Stopped Administering Covaxin First Dose?

Assam news: Assam has stopped administering the first dose of Covaxin, said Assam Health Minister Keshab Mahanta during a press conference.

Assam Health Minister Keshab Mahanta said that they have 3.2 lakh Covishield and 20,000 Covaxin doses in their stock. Another 50,000 doses of Covaxin will be available within the week. They need 1.50 lakh more (shots of) Covaxin to administer the second dose.

The press conference took place in Guwahati. “Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma went to New Delhi to discuss the procurement of more vaccines for Assam,” Mahanta said.

The minister informed the media that the vaccination drives will be conducted more rigorously in six districts. These districts are Kamrup Metro, where state capital Dispur and main city Guwahati is located, Nagaon, Sonitpur, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, and Cachar.

The minister said that they are administering 50,000 vaccine doses every day to date. They are targeting to give at least 70,000 doses daily.

Due to a shortage of doses, at many places in Assam, the vaccination drive has been stopped.

In the meantime, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday, June 4 discussed the COVID 19 situation in the state in a meeting with Health Department. During the meeting, he permitted the department not to allow home quarantine for patients with comorbidities, irrespective of their age group. Also, refer them to institutional quarantine.

Himanta Biswa Sarma took to Twitter to inform the same. He wrote, “To bring positivity and mortality rates further down, Covid patients of any age group with any comorbidity will be kept in institutional quarantine.”

During the meeting, the ministers mulled over the Covid treatment costs in private hospitals. Also talked about the state government’s maximum rates private healthcare units that they can charge for treatment inwards and ICUs

Besides this, he also took notice of pediatric ICUs’ status which have been set up at various government hospitals, and the functioning of oxygen plants in the state. He permitted the authorities to speedily carry out the vaccination exercise in the state.
