Ebrahim Raisi: Ebrahim Raisi, a reputed judge, after winning most of the votes, is all set to become Iran’s next president. He won after beating three other candidates in a poll in which most would-be candidates were barred from standing.

Raisi holds ultra-conservative views and is under US sanctions. He has also been linked to past executions of political prisoners. After the supreme leader, Iran’s president is the second-highest-ranking official in the
country.

Raisi will be a significant influencer in deciding domestic policies and foreign affairs. However, in Iran the political is prominently ruled by country’s supreme leader. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is the supreme leader, the top religious cleric, who holds all commands in deciding the final words on every state matter.

The country’s political system runs mostly according to conservative religious values. Since the Islamic Revolution in 1979 inception, there have been restrictions on political freedoms.

While many Iranians believe this latest election is a planned one to register a win for Raisi and shunned the poll.

Who is Ebrahim Raisi?

1.) Mostly, the 60-year-old cleric served as a prosecutor.

2.) He was appointed as head of the judiciary in 2019. After two years he was defeated by Hassan Rouhani in the last presidential election.

3.) Raisi consider himself as the best advocate of fighting corruption and solve Iran’s economic problems. As he cast his vote in Tehran, he said
“Our people’s grievances over shortcomings are real.”

4.) He is loyal to Iran’s ruling clerics. It has been predicted that he will be a possible successor to Ayatollah Khamenei as the country’s supreme leader.

5.) There are many Iranians and rights groups who’ve have pointed Raisi’s role in the mass executions of political prisoners in the 1980s. As per Amnesty International, he was appointed as one of four judges who supervised death sentences for about 5,000 prisoners.

6) Amnesty also emphasised that as the head of the judiciary, Raisi administered impunity for officials and security forces accused of killing protesters during an agitation in 2019.
