The space agency is looking for a Lunar Rescue System that can move an astronaut over two kilometers across the Moon’s South Pole, climbing a 20-degree incline, without the use of a rover. This initiative is part of NASA’s Artemis missions, which face challenges like extreme temperatures, uneven surfaces, and bulky spacesuits.

As NASA is preparing for the Artemis mission in 2026. The agency is concerned about the possibility of an astronaut being incapacitated on the Moon due to injury, medical issues, or accidents. In such cases, it would be essential for fellow crew members to have a reliable way to transport the affected astronaut back to the lunar lander.

Moreover the winning design must be capable of moving a fully suited astronaut over rough terrain, up a 20-degree incline, without the assistance of a lunar rover. Though the Moon’s lower gravity reduces the astronaut’s weight, manual transportation is still not feasible, making a technological solution crucial.
This is an opportunity for innovators to contribute to the future of lunar exploration and astronaut safety. Entries are open until January 23, 2025, via the HeroX portal, where NASA typically posts its public challenges. The submitted designs will be evaluated by NASA’s experts and engineers. For this reason the designs will be selected considering certain factors. The factors includes weight, ease of use, and compatibility with the astronaut’s new Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Suit.
