Bari Weiss resigns from NYT

New York Times opinion editor, writer Bari Weiss has resigned from her position. She published a scathing resignation letter on her way out Tuesday that accused the newspaper of allowing “unlawful discrimination, hostile work environment, and constructive discharge,” among other misdeeds.

The June piece was broadly denounced inside and past the paper and among scores of perusers. It started what Weiss called a war between “(for the most part youthful) wokes” and “(generally 40+) nonconformists” and eventually prompted the takeoff of Opinion supervisor James Bennet.

Weiss, who said she encountered “steady harassing by partners” who can’t help contradicting her perspectives, was additionally among the signatories of Harper’s open letter restricting drop culture. She said she encountered tormenting on the web and bemoaned the New York Times’ inaction on her supposed badgering.

According to reports, Weiss said that she’s been “the subject of constant bullying by colleagues who disagree with my views. They have called me a Nazi and a racist; I have learned to brush off comments about how I’m ‘writing about the Jews again.’ Several colleagues perceived to be friendly with me were badgered by coworkers. My work and my character are openly demeaned on company-wide Slack channels where masthead editors regularly weigh in.

“Some coworkers insist I need to be rooted out if this company is to be a truly ‘inclusive’ one, while others post ax emojis next to my name. Still, other New York Times employees publicly smear me as a liar and a bigot on Twitter with no fear that harassing me will be met with appropriate action. They never are,” she wrote in her resignation letter addressed to Times publisher A.G. Sulzberger.

Her resignation follows that of James Bennet, the editor of the Opinion section, who stepped down last month after a number of Times staffers verbally protested the decision to publish an op-ed by Sen.

Weiss, the author of a book on anti-Semitism, describes herself as a centrist, and she has made some errors. She has complained before about the social media “mob,” telling HBO’s Bill Maher two years ago: “Saying ‘I am offended’ is a way of making someone radioactive; a way of smearing their reputation,” according to media reports.

The Times’ acting editorial page editor, Kathleen Kingsbury, thanks Weiss for her service and said the paper will continue to publish “voices, experiences and viewpoints from across the political spectrum.”
