Three local politicians in the US state of Pennsylvania came up with the idea of going topless to raise awareness and put images of mail-in ballots procedures to cover their chests and warned voters of ‘naked ballots.’
Politicians go topless in Pensylvania
Local politicians in Pennsylvania posted topless pictures in a rather unusual social media campaign to raise awareness on ‘naked ballots’ or mail-in ballots without secrecy envelope.
Bethany Hallan, a councilwoman for Allegheny County asked her fellow councilwoman – Olivia Bennet ‘Do you want to get naked to save Democracy’. Bennet said ‘OK’ and they roped in a third politician, State representative-elect, Emily Kinkead.
They together strategically used images of mail-in ballots to cover their chests The text in the images clearly explains step by step information to avoid their votes thrown out and rightly put in the ballots in the secrecy envelopes.
The voters must put in their ballots first in secrecy envelope and then put it in the addressed envelope, their votes would be counted. In case the voters miss out on the procedure, the authorities may discard the envelops considering it as ‘naked ballots’.

The very thought of ‘naked ballots’ struck Hallen and she asked her allies to join in for the campaign going topless to raise the awareness. As every vote counts in this heavily fought election contest in the state, Hallan thought of the very idea of a ‘naked campaign’ to warn voters of the issue.
She told the media ‘Immediately when she heard the term naked ballots, she thought of taking control back and gain voters attention when she competes in the male-dominated environment of politics’
She also told that it was joyful posing for the campaign as every vote matters and is vital in the general election and it was nice to pose along with two of her allies who expressed the excitement to be involved in this unusual awareness campaign.
As their topless campaign posts were up on the social media, they met with millions of like with mixed reaction from netizens. While some heaped praise, they were also met with backlash. However, many fellow politicians have pledged to join the campaign and spread the awareness and are due to join later this week and the public are going to be roped in for the campaign to make it a successful awareness campaign among the locals.
Pennsylvania is one of the key battleground and a crucial state to win to surge ahead in the presidential elections. The last election saw Donald Trump win by a slight margin of 44,000 votes in 2016.
