Andrzej Duda wins presidential elections in Poland

Poland’s presidential election: Andrzej Duda, Poland’s conservative and incumbent president has narrowly beaten his opponent in Sunday’s presidential vote to become Poland’s president once again and serve his second term in office after the tight race. The opponent Rafal Trzaskowski however, refused to accept the defeat, saying it is too close to call.

Results of 99 per cent of polls stations showing Duda has got 51.2 per cent vote while his Counterpart accounted for 48.85 per cent votes. Though Rafal Trzaskowski said that he is confident of winning, once the counting of votes gets finished. On the other hand, the National Election commission said, the remaining uncounted votes are unlikely to impact the outcome.

Voter turnout broke records by accounting 68.9 per cent, the highest in 25 years for a presidential election. In a public rally on Sunday, Duda said he was accepting victory based on the exit polls, thanked civilians for trusting him and allowing him to serve the nation.

US President Donald Trump also took to his social media account to congratulate Andrzej Duda on his “historic” win in the presidential polls. He wrote, “Congratulations to my friend President @AndrzejDuda of Poland on his historic re-election! Looking forward to continuing our important work together across many issues, including defense, trade, energy, and telecommunications security!” Trump on Monday wrote in a Twitter post.

Duda invited Trzaskowski for a handshake at the Presidential palace. In response, Trzaskowski thanked Duda for the invitation, but added,” I am confident about my win, and I think the most appropriate will be after the election results announcement.

Duda’s win is expected to lead to further controversial judiciary and opposition to abortion and LGBT rights.

According to analysts, the battle between these two is very close, and it may lead to court challenges, as none of them will tolerate a very close defeat.

As per the sources, Duda has an upper hand. Let’s wait for the final results. Only time will tell ‘who puts the final nail in the coffin?’
