Nominations for the first phase of Assam Assembly elections has started and very few of the women candidates from different political parties have been shortlisted according to the list released by the Chief Electoral Officer’s Office, under the Election Commission of India. BJP has nominated the merely highest (four) women candidates from its wing compared to the other political parties.

Ajanta Neog for Golaghat, Angkita Dutta for Sivsagar Amguri, Pallabi Gogoi for Teok, Rupa Bora for Sivsagar, Jutika Doley for Dhakuakhana, and Pranati Phukan for Naharkatia in Dibrugarh constituencies will be contesting in the upcoming Assembly elections, according to the nomination list so far. While BJP’s Angoorlata Deka from Batadrawa, Surabhi Rajkonwar from Sibsagar and Nandita Garlosa from Haflong will also be seen fighting for seats in Assam Assembly Polls this year. The first phase of Assembly polls has been scheduled for March 27, 2021.

BJP nominating only four women candidates also shows its patriarchal mindset. Moreover, only Angoorlata likely has a chance of winning in the upcoming elections. Most of the women will have to face strong contenders from other parties which shows their chance of winning as bleak. With such low numbers of women candidates in the elections, it is quite admissible that politics is dominated by the “patriarchal mindset”.
