Oscars 2019: Guneet Monga’s Indian documentary on menstruation taboo makes history at Academy Awards

Guneet Monga’s documentary film Period - End of the sentence has won an Oscar at the 91st Academy Awards. The 25-minute documentary revolves around the social stigma related to women's menstruation, and the lack of sanitation in rural areas. The film has been directed by Iranian-American filmmaker Rayka Zehtabchi.

Oscars 2019: Indian film producer Guneet Monga’s Period. End of Sentence which has been directed by Rayka Zehtabchi, has created history by winning the most prestigious award in the international platform. Yes, the film has bagged an Oscar under the category Best Documentary Short at the 91st Academy Awards. The documentary film is based on the taboo revolving around the women menstruation and the outlook of Indian society towards the subject. According to reports, the film was finally nominated along with the other famous films such as Black Sheep, End Game, Lifeboat and A Night at the Garden under that category.

Meanwhile, the film has been praised by many famous producers and directors and has garnered rave reviews worldwide. Directed by Iranian-American filmmaker the film is a 25-minute documentary which has been created under an organisation Pad Project run by famous Melissa Berton. A group of students at the Oakwood School in Los Angeles was involved in the making of this film. According to reports, the film portrays the social stigma related to women’s menstruation, lack of sanitation for women in rural areas, and the superstitions revolved around the subject.

Talking about the film and its achievement, the film’s executive producer Guneet Monga said that she is honoured and absolutely humbled to collaborate with Melissa and Rayka in this short documentary. She further said, “Mandakini Kakar from Sikhya was on the floor working with the film and is the voice of the film too. Now that we have an Oscar, let’s go change the world,” according to a report in Vogue.
