Rihanna, Jay-Z and other celebrities demand justice for Danroy ‘DJ’ Henry Jr’s death

Danroy 'DJ' Henry Jr was shot dead by a police officer in 2010 at a parking lot outside a bar.

George Floyd’s death by a Minneapolis police officer has thrown the light on many other cases in which black Americans were killed by police officers, including Danroy “DJ” Henry Jr. Musicians Rihanna and Jay-Z came forward demanding the Department of Justice to reopen Danroy ‘DJ’ Henry’s case from 2010, asking US Attorney General William Brarr to re-examine the case.

The artists signed a letter seeking the department to re-look the murder of Danroy. Celebrities such as Pharrell Williams, Charlize Theron, Taraji Henson, Odell Beckham Jr, Michael Williams, Kerry Washington, Mary J Blige and Gabrielle Union singed the petition and stood along Rihanna and Jay-Z.

Who is Danroy “DJ” Henry Jr.?

Danroy, an African American Football player at Pace University. He graduated from Oliver Ames High School in Easton. On October 17,2010, was shot dead by Pleasantville, N.Y., police officer Aaron Hess. Danroy was celebrating a game victory with his teammates at a bar.

The police stated that DJ parked his car in a emergency lane in front of the bar and when he was asked to move, he sped off towards Officer Aaron Hess.

Hess in a statement claimed that in order to save himself, he landed on his bonnet and shot him.

Danroy’s Friend Dispute Officer Hess’s Statement

The case has seen several twists and turns since a decade as Henry’s friends claimed that DJ didn’t speed up his car towards the officer and he was simply following what the officer asked him to do before Hess pulled the trigger on him.

Hess was never charged in Henry’s death. The Department of Justice in 2015 announced there was not enough evidence to pursue criminal charges.

Recently Gorge Floyd’s death to led nationwide protests in America against police brutality, inequality, racial injustice and systemic racism. The musicians requested to reopen the case saying justice needs to be delivered.
