As cute and cuddly, cats generally require low maintenance. Cats are aloof and easily startled, and needs your love, attention and care.

Animals are just like your kid, in order to please them you have to think according to them. For animal lovers, one need to understand what their pets want. Cats are not like dogs. Dogs are the animals who actually pleases the leader. Unlike dogs, cats are pack of animals who will be more interested in pleasing itself.

The first thing to realize is that cats do not understand punishment. In case of cats, remember the three ‘R’s’ – respect, reinforcement and rewards. Let’s discuss how to train your cats:

Clicker Training:
Clicker training is a modern, kind and scientific way of training animals. Kittens also get a ‘click’ to mark any good behavior with the clicker training app in your smartphone.

Discourage Biting:
Biting is kittens natural behaviour. Use of toys and balls are safer than your hands. If during the play session, kitten bites your hand, end the session immediately.

Scratch:
Kittens love to scratch. Actually it’s a natural form of territorial marking that also gives the muscles a good stretch. But can you accept it? No.
So train your kitten that way. Put your kitten on the slippery surfaces as they aren’t keen to scratch them. But you can also buy a scratching post.

Let’s meet with some of the breeds or individual cats who are actually willing to train:
1. Abyssinian
2. American Shorthair/Domestic Shorthair
3. Bengal
4. Savannah
5. Siamese

These are the few of the breeds of cats who love to showcase their talents and are renowned for their brains and train-ability. Yet there are many who are different as per their requirement. Understanding the natural instincts of the cats can help when it comes to training in play, behavior and even travel.

The key is to remember that all behaviors, even the ones you don’t like, serve a purpose for the cat. Instead of viewing a behavior as a misbehavior, look at it as a clue for you to figure out what the cat is trying to tell you.
