Veteran actor and comedian Jagadeep passes away at the age of 81.
Veteren actor and comedian Jagadeep, known for his famous comic role as Soorna Bhoopali in the 1975 blockbuster movie Sholay passes away at the age of 81. He acted in over 400 films in a career spanning for more than six decades. He was first seen on the silver screen as a child actor in Afsana, which released in 1951 starring Ashok Kumar.
Born as Syed Ishtiaq Ahmed Jaffrey, he is better known by his stage name Jagadeep. The actor was last seen on the silver screen in the movie Gali Gali Chor Hai, which released in 2012 starring Akshaye Khanna, Shriya Saran and Mugdha Godse in the lead roles. Jagadeep played the role of a police constable named MunshiJi.
Jagadeep is best known for his roles in movies like Bhabi, Bharka, Purana Mandir, Qurbani, Sahenshah among others. However, he got a breakthrough for his most remarkable role in Sholay with his mischievous eyes and grin with the famous dialogue “Mera naam Soorma Bhopali aise hi nahin hai” is still remembered by fans.

In 1988, he went on to direct a movie titled Soorna Bhoopali reprising his role alongside Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra. Notably, he is better known for eye catching roles with impeccable comical timing.
His other notable work include horror movies made by Ramsey Brothers, later also starred in movies like Andaaz Apna Apna, where he played the role of Salman Khan’s father. IIFA honoured him with a ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ in 2019 along with recently demised Saroj Khan.
Bollywood celebrities such as Shatrugan Sinha, Javed Akhtar, Mahesh Bhatt and Raj Babbar mourned his demise and poured their condolences on Twitter. Jagadeep leaves behind six children, including Javed Jaffrey.
