Farmer's Protest Leads To Massive Traffic Disruptions In Delhi-Noida

Traffic across Delhi and Noida has been severely disrupted ahead of the farmers’ ‘Delhi Chalo’ protest march scheduled for Monday. Farmers participating in the protest are set to head towards the Parliament complex. The protest is organized by Bhartiya Kisan Parishad (BKP) along with other farmer unions from over 20 districts. Moreover the farmer’s protest is aimed at pressing the central government to address its five major demands.

Long queues of vehicles have been reported in various parts of Delhi-NCR, as security measures intensify with police barricades in place. Several videos have surfed the internet showing cars crawling at a snail’s pace at the Chilla border, while the DND (Delhi-Noida Direct) expressway appears gridlocked. Due to the protests, the vehicles have been stalled in at least ten lanes to control the traffic.

Moreover in anticipation of the disruptions, the Noida Police has already issued a traffic advisory on Sunday. The advisory has warned commuters about the planned restrictions and diversions. Alternative routes have been suggested to ease the flow of traffic:

• For those traveling from Chilla Border to Greater Noida: Take the Sector 14-A flyover, Golchakkar Chowk, Sandeep Paper Mill Chowk, and Jhunjhupura Chowk.
• For travel from the DND Border to Delhi: Use the Film City flyover, Sector-18, and the Elevated Road.
• For Kalindi Border to Delhi: Proceed via Mahamaya flyover, Sector-37.
• For Greater Noida to Delhi: Take the Charkha roundabout, Kalindi Kunj, or Hajipur underpass via Sector-51 and Model Town.
• For traffic on the Yamuna Expressway: Exit at the Jewar toll and continue via Khurja and Jahangirpur.
• For vehicles on the Peripheral Expressway: Use Dadri or Dasna exits instead of Sirsa.

The heightened security also includes increased vehicle inspections at checkpoints throughout the city.

What Is The Farmer’s Protest All About?

The protest, led by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (non-political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM), is a continuation of farmers’ ongoing struggle against the Centre’s policies. This protest particularly concerns the compensation of the newly enacted agricultural laws. Moreover since February, farmers have been protesting at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points between Punjab and Haryana.

The farmers’ five primary demands are as follows:

1. Allocation of 10 percent of plots and a 64.7 percent increase in compensation under the previous acquisition law.
2. Four times the market rate compensation and 20 percent of plots for lands acquired after January 1, 2014.
3. Employment and rehabilitation benefits for the children of landless farmers.
4. Implementation of the issues addressed by the High Power Committee through official government orders.
5. Adequate settlement for populated areas affected by land acquisitions.

Hence BKP leader Sukhbir Khalifa has confirmed the march’s route. Furthermore he has given a statement stating that farmers will begin their journey from under the Maha Maya flyover in Noida. They have planned to reach the Parliament complex by noon. Their demands are all about fair compensation and benefits in line with the new agricultural laws.
