Supreme Court Orders To Extend Ban Firecrackers In Haryana And Uttar Pradesh To Curb Pollution
In a significant move to combat rising pollution in the Delhi NCR region. The Supreme Court has extended the ban on firecracker sales to Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. This decision comes after the court’s review of the growing pollution levels in the region on Thursday. The ban, which had already been imposed in Delhi, now applies to these neighboring states as well. The ban is applied specifically to those areas which comes under the NCR.
During the hearing, Delhi government informed the court that sale and stock of firecrackers have been prohibited in the capital year-round. The court responded by stating that the ban’s effectiveness would only be fully realized if other NCR states followed suit. As a result, the Supreme Court directed Uttar Pradesh and Haryana to implement the same ban. This focuses on the ban imposed during Delhi from December 19, 2024. Rajasthan, too, has already imposed a similar ban in its NCR region.
The Supreme Court emphasized that the success of these measures depends on a collective approach across all NCR states. The court referred to Rajasthan’s actions and urged Uttar Pradesh and Haryana to take immediate action to curb firecracker sales.

Additionally, the Supreme Court took up the matter of air pollution in the NCR region and reviewed the ongoing efforts to combat it. The focus was on enforcing the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). This also includes Solid Waste Management Rules, of 2016, which are designed to reduce pollution.
The court directed that teams of officials, including police and revenue officers, should be formed in these NCR states to ensure strict compliance with GRAP-IV measures. These teams will act as officers of the court, tasked with monitoring and implementing the prescribed pollution control measures effectively.
This move is part of a broader effort to address the environmental challenges faced by the National Capital Region, with Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Rajasthan now under greater scrutiny to reduce the harmful effects of pollution.
