Weather Update: Cold Wave To Hit North India

North India is bracing for a severe cold wave as the New Year begins. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the weather will worsen due to a new western disturbance expected to impact the region starting January 4. The cold wave, which will begin intensifying on December 30, is set to cause significant weather disruptions.

From January 1 to 3, scattered rain and snowfall are forecasted in the hilly areas, especially in the mountains. The western disturbance is expected to bring rain to states like Punjab and Haryana as well. These areas will also experience dense fog, creating hazardous conditions, particularly during the late-night and early-morning hours.

The IMD has issued warnings for dense to very dense fog, especially in North-West India and the North-Eastern states. States such as Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh are already experiencing a cold wave. Dense fog will likely continue to affect visibility in these regions. Additionally, Jammu and Kashmir, along with Himachal Pradesh, is dealing with a worsening cold wave, with snowfall exacerbating the situation.

Cold And Severe Cold Days Ahead

From December 30, cold day and severe cold day conditions are likely to prevail in parts of Haryana and Chandigarh. Dense fog is also expected in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Rajasthan late on December 30. A severe cold day is predicted when the maximum temperature falls more than 6.5 degrees below normal, while cold days will have temperatures 4.5 to 6.4 degrees below normal.
