Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Urges People To Take Pledge To Put End To Forced Labour

On World Day Against Child Labour, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in a tweet, urged the people to take pledge to put an end to forced labour.

World Day Against Child Labour: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on World Day Against Child Labour urged the people to take pledge in order to put an end to forced labour.

In the tweet, he wrote that one should nurture the dreams of every young child in a way to end forced labour and fulfil the hopes and aspirations of every child of this nation.

In another tweet he informed that today Assam police rescued four girls from Baihata who’ve been the suspected victim of attempted Human Trafficking. The girls are from Paneri of Udalguri.

In this connection, one accused Giyas Ali aged 32 yrs, s/o Lt Sumed Ali, 1 No. Baruahjhar has been arrested by Panery Police.

Interrogation is on.

A case has been registered at Paneri Police Station vide PNY PS Case No. 50/21 u/s 366 (a)/ 370 IPC r/w Sec 14 of Child Labour Act.

Efforts are underway to find out the other accused. Assam CM also lauded the Assam Police efforts.

Union Minister Smriti Irani also tweeted regarding World Day against Child Labour. She highlighted the importance of education in making a happy childhood and asked the people to together, reaffirm their commitment towards combatting child labour. Also emphasised on the people’s participation that can ensure a deserving childhood for children

This year the theme is ‘Week of Action’. The theme began on June 10. Elaborating on the significance of the day, the ILO report stated that Child labour reinforces intergenerational poverty, threatens national economies and undercuts rights guaranteed by the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Additionally, 2021 is also celebrated as the International Year for the Elimination of Child Labour.

According to the report, a number of children between age five (5) and seventeen (17) are exposed to hazardous work. The numbers have been risen by 6.5 million to 79 million since 2016.

Terming the numbers as an alarming situation, ILO Director-General Guy Ryder said that the new estimates are a wake-up call. They cannot stand by while a new generation of children is put at risk.
