Guwahati on Monday got the country’s longest river ropeway that will connect two banks of the Brahmaputra. Built at a cost of Rs 56 crore, the ropeway will cover a distance of 1.8 km, and bring down the travelling time between north Guwahati and the central part of the city to eight minutes.

Assam’s health and education minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the inauguration of the ropeway is a golden day in the modern history of Guwahati, in particular, and Assam as a whole. There are many long ropeways on mountains but the one over the Brahmaputra is the longest river ropeway in the country. I am proud and happy to inaugurate the Guwahati Ropeway, the seeds of which were sown when I was the minister of the Guwahati Development Department (GDD).

He also highlighted the other projects undertaken for the development and beautification of the city to transform it into a major metropolis.

Why a ropeway?

As thousands of people commute every day between the capital city of Guwahati and the town of North Guwahati, where IIT Guwahati is located. Therefore, it is expected that the ropeway cuts travel time between the two banks to 8 minutes. The current travel options between the two banks are by ferry (30 minutes or more, depending on current and season) or by road through a bridge that usually takes over an hour in the traffic.

“One-way travel on the ropeway will take, say 9-10 minutes. So in 20 minutes if a person can complete a round trip between Guwahati and North Guwahati, it will be immensely beneficial,” said Umananda Doley, CEO of Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority

To Increase Potential Tourism in Assam

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal expressed in his tweet that apart from substantially reducing travel time, the ropeway will provide a breathtaking view of the mighty Brahmaputra and promote tourism in the State.

Tourists can take the ropeway to North Guwahati and spend quality time on that side. Hospitality services will also develop on that side and thus the ropeway is expected to be an overall boost for tourism in the city.

Construction of this ropeway can exponentially increase tourism and develop the other side as a tourist hotspot.

Structure and Construction Cost

Assam minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who inaugurated the ropeway, mentioned in his tweet that this ropeway is one of the most advanced & longest river crossing Aerial Tramway systems in India. According to the officials, the ropeway uses a twin-track, single-haul, bi-cable double reversible jig back system.

The ropeway comprises two cabins — each with a capacity of 30 passengers plus one operator. The project was built at a cost of Rs 56 crore.

Guwahati Ropeway Ticket Price

Tickets have been fixed at Rs 100 for a round trip, and Rs 60 for a one-way trip.
