Mizoram Earthquake: Series of quakes hit state leaving people in panic

Mizoram Earthquake: A series of 22 quakes recorded in the state since a month with severe damages reported in four districts.

Mizoram Earthquake: Mizoram has been witnessing a series of earthquake since 18th June. The state has been ravaged by at least 22 earthquakes in four districts – Champhai, Saitual, Siaha and Serchhip so far with tremors ranging from 4.4 to 5.5 magnitude.

The worst-hit has been Champai district witnessing at least 20 earthquakes in a month. Deputy Commissioner has told the media that makeshift tents have been arranged with the district administration providing tarpaulins, solar lamps and first aid kits with the supply of food as well to the elderly. Further detailing about the aftereffect of the quake, at least 170 houses including churches have been damaged in 16 villages.

The government has pitched in with relief aids. On Monday, three teams of health professionals have been dispatched which includes psychiatrists, physicians and mental health professionals to help the citizens to overcome trauma post experiencing the series of quakes. According to psychiatrists responding to media, told of people having anxiety experiencing the series of quakes and are being counselled to overcome panicking.

The state government has sent geologists to assess the situation along with a joint venture with Mizoram University. The Mizoram government has also sought help from the centre to send expert seismologists to study the ground situation and to investigate the exact cause of the state.

Prime minister Narendra Modi has assured of every assistance to the earthquake hit the state. According to reports, Mr Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah called up the Mizoram Chief Minister Zoranthanga to take stock of the situation on Monday, No casualties have been reported so far according to the state government.
