California Man Diagnosed With Plague For The First Time In Five Years

A resident of California has been detected with plague for the first time since five years. The last known case was in 2015.

A resident of South Lake Tahoe, California has been detected with plague for the first time since the last case was reported in 2015. As per the press release of El Dorado County Health and Human Services Agency, the person was bitten by the infected flea while walking in the aisle with his dog, Health Officials said, “the patient is recovering from home under the care of medical professionals”.

Symptoms of plague are detected after two weeks. Plague symptoms depend on how the patient was exposed to the plague bacteria. Plague can take different clinical forms, but the most common are bubonic, pneumonic, and septicemic.

It is diagnosed when the person feels fever, chills, nausea, weakness, swollen lymph nodes, vomiting, pain or bleeding in organs. Once it is detected the concerned person should seek immediate medical assistance. It can be treated well if it gets detected in an early stage.

El Dorado County Officials are investigating after the case came positive by the California Department of the Health Officials, since the last case was reported in 2015. Health Official of El Dorado County Dr. Williams said in his report, “Human cases of plague are extremely rare but can be very serious.”.

The plague is naturally available in the areas including higher elevation levels. He also added, “It’s important that individuals take precautions for themselves and their pets when outdoors, especially while walking, hiking and/or camping in areas where wild rodents are present.”

Looking at the history, the last plague was detected in two people in 2015 when they were passing through the infected rodents in the Yosemite National Park of California. Before this, it was in 2006 a person was infected. All were treated and cured.

In recent decades, it has been reported that an average of seven cases comes every year. Earlier in this month, a man from Mexico was diagnosed with Septicemic plague and died, he was in his 20’s. This was the state’s second case which was reported this year.
