Starbucks labels Muslim woman in hijab as ISIS in its coffee cup.

A 19-year-old Muslim woman in the US named Aishah filed discrimination charges against supermarket chain Target after an in-store Starbucks employee wrote “ISIS” on her coffee cup instead of her name. Aishah revealed she clearly told her name and spelled it out to the employee multiple times before placing her order.

Upon receiving her order, the hijab wearing teen looked at her cup only to see the name ‘ISIS’ written in bold letters. Infuriated by the discrimination, Aishah confronted the employee, and her manager intervened only to be told that people get their names wrong most of the time.

“I asked her why she wrote this on my cup and I proceeded to ask for a manager,” the teen told Today Food. ”The manager looked at the cup and looked at me and said, ‘What is the issue? People get their name spelled wrong all the time.’”

Enraged by the manager’s comments, she asked to speak to a higher authority and the store manager intervened in the issue offering Aishah a new drink and a $25 Starbucks gift card and escorted the teenager out of the cafe.

I Felt Humiliated, Says Aishah

Aishah opened up about her horrific incident at a press conference saying she felt humiliated and enraged on the appalling bigotry she had to face. “When I first received the drink I was in shock that in this day and age something like this could be written,” she added, “I felt humiliated. I felt enraged.”

Jaylani Hussein, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations Minnesota spoke on her behalf, ”This is not a simple mistake. No one puts the ‘KKK’ on the cup of somebody’s drink. We demand Target/Starbucks to value Muslims and unequivocally reject Islamophobia. This incident and the current Islamophobia Apologist response from Target is appalling and telling of how tone deaf they are to Islamophobia and bigotry,” Hussein told Today.

Target Sends Out A Press Release, Apologizes To Aishah, But Says It Was Not Deliberate

After receiving severe criticism for the way in which Target handled the horrific situation, the supermarket chain sent a press release and the statement read, ”At Target, we want everyone who shops with us to feel welcomed, valued and respected and we strictly prohibit discrimination and harassment in any form. We are very sorry for this guest’s experience at our store and immediately apologized to her when she made our store leaders aware of the situation.”

”We have investigated the matter and believe that it was not a deliberate act but an unfortunate mistake that could have been avoided with more clarification. We’re taking appropriate actions with the team member, including additional training, to ensure this does not occur again.”
