Christian Tybring-Gjedde, a Norwegian lawmaker feels Donald Trump’s role in brokering a peace deal between Israel and UAE is ''historic'' and should be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Amidst the frenzy wave of US election, which is just a couple of months away. Donald Trump has again made headlines. This time, the scene is set in Norway with a Norwegian lawmaker nominating Trump for Nobel Peace Prize after his ”historic Israel – UAE deal.”

Christian Tybring-Gjedde, a lawmaker with the populist Progress Party told media that Donald Trump should be awarded for his groundbreaking deal between the two countries which according to him was ”hostile as long as you can remember.” If nominated, Trump would be the fifth American president to received the award after Barack Obama, Jimmy Carter, Woodrow Wilson and Theodore Roosevelt.

The Israel UAE deal, known otherwise as Abraham Accord is a peace deal agreement between the two countries. Signed on 13 August 2020, UAE becomes the third country after Egypt in 1979 and Jordan in 1994 to normalize relations with Israel. The deal is expected to be signed at the White House in the mid September. The delegation is expected to be led by Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Natenyahu and UAE foreign minister, Sheik Abdullah Bin Zayed Nahyam.

The historic deal will be a key foreign policy victory for Trump as he looks forward to a changing middle east amidst the tension with Iran. The Norwegian lawmaker Gjedde had earlier nominated Trump for his meet with Kim Jong Un back in 2018 saying that it was ”honorable”.

Although he nominates Trump, he is little surprised of the nomination of Barak Obama who won the award in 2009. According to him, the committee was impressed by his speeches and how he behaved during the first month of his presidency and adding to that he is the first Black American president which is also an achievement but he suggests that the committee let alone look into the achievements of the individuals.

Gjedde likes the agreement also known as the Abraham Accord which is named in honour of Abraham who is revered in the religions of the region – Christianity and Judaism which is similar in lines of the peace agreements that made history in the middle east.

The 1978 camp David Accord between Israael and Egypt and the Oslo accord of 1990s between Israel and PLO and those peace deals turned historic with Anwar Sadat and Menachem Begin awarded the peace prize in 1978 and Yasser Arafat, Shimon Peres and Yitzhak Rabin winning the prize in 1994.. He said this is a very important region of the world and all the peace efforts made in this region should be awarded with a Nobel Peace prize.
