Google Doodle is honouring gay rights activist

Google doodle has honored American gay rights activist, astronomer Frank Kameny on June 2 during pride month. He is referred to as one of the most prominent popular figures in the American Gay rights movement.

His homosexuality had been a bone of contention. Due to which he was dismissed from his position as an astronomer in the United States. Later he began his long-drawn-out struggle with the American establishment and led a new era of militancy in the homosexual rights movement of the early 1960s.

Born to Ashkenazi Jewish parents in New York City, he completed his school studies at Richmond Hill High School. In 1941, he graduated and in the same year, at age 16, attended Queens College to learn physics. At the age of 17, he accepted in front of his parents that he was an atheist.

He is a World War II veteran who served in the Army in Europe. Later, he performed his duties for 20 years on the Selective Service Board.

He pursued his master’s degree in 1949 and completed his doctorate in the year 1956 in astronomy. His doctorate thesis name was ‘A Photoelectric Study of Some RV Tauri and Yellow Semiregular Variables’. It was written under the supervision of Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin.

Kameny became a professor in Washington D.C in the Astronomy Department of Georgetown University by the United States Army Map Service. But later he lost his job due to his sexual orientation. It was followed by a ban on the LGBTQ community for federal employment by the government.

In 1961, he filed the first gay rights appeal to the US Supreme Court after suing the government.

On April 17, 1965, Kameny and fellow co-founder of the Washington, D.C., branch of the Mattachine Society, Jack Nichols, organized some public protests by gays and lesbians at the White House.

In 1971, Kameny was the first openly gay candidate for the United States Congress.

Kameny found dead on September 30, 2011, in Washington D.C. after suffering a heart ailment. His last speech was regarding the LGBT group in Washington, D.C.

Events During Pride Month

For example, in San Francisco, there will be a Pride movie night. The attendees are required to wear face masks and maintain social distancing. Whereas Los Angeles will organize two outdoor Pride events.

Atlanta Pride Run will also take place this year in person. The purpose of the run is to spread LGBTQ awareness in the community.

In case you are unable to attend the events and you just want to support the LGBTQ community. Then you have an option to do donations to Pride organizations. The International LGBTQ Travel Association organization provides marketing assistance to LGBTQ businesses.

If you can’t do anything above mentioned and want to avoid an outing or support mechanism due to COVD 19 restrictions you can celebrate the month by simply watching TV shows on Netflix. The video streamline service has a genre page for Pride Month. This includes movies, TV shows, documentaries, GLAAD award nominees and many more.

TV shows ‘Feel Good’ and ‘Elite’ with brand new seasons are also available in June, Netflix told CNET.
