Delhi government expands old-age pension scheme

In a significant move towards enhancing social welfare. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal made a huge announcement on Monday that has showed his commitment towards the elderly citizens. AAP leader made an announcement that an additional 80,000 individuals are now eligible for old-age pensions in the capital. Hence for this reason it has bought an increase to the total number of pension beneficiaries to approximately 530,000.

During a press conference, Kejriwal has emphasized that the Delhi government has made a commitment in supporting its elderly population. This commitment brings in social welfare development. The expansion follows a Cabinet decision made on Sunday. This also saw the launch of a new online portal designed for seniors to apply for pensions. Since its launch, the portal has reportedly received around 10,000 applications, the AAP leader claimed.

“It is a sin to stop the pensions of old people,” Mr Kejriwal said, accusing the BJP of halting pensions during his imprisonment. He further on added on saying, “After coming out, we not only restarted the halted pensions but also added 80,000 new beneficiaries,” Moreover he also said,  “After this addition, the total number of pensioners in Delhi is around 5.3 lakh.”

Kehriwal Says Delhi Also Offers Highest Pension Rate In India

Kejriwal also pointed out that Delhi offers the highest pension rates in the nation. The government offers with a total of ₹2,000 allocated to individuals aged 60 to 69 and ₹2,500 for those aged 70 and above.

Apart from Arvind Kejriwal, the press conference also included Delhi Chief Minister Atishi and Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj. Atishi also reaffirmed the government’s dedication to serving the community. Moroever Bharadwaj announced plans to implement a monthly pension of ₹5,000 for differently-abled individuals. This underlines the government’s broader commitment to inclusivity and support for vulnerable groups.

This initiative is part of a larger strategy by the Delhi government to bolster its social welfare programs. Furthermore it also assures that more elderly residents receive the financial assistance they need.
