In a landmark decision, the Assam government has officially renamed the Assam’s Karimganj district to Sribhumi. This move has steeped in cultural significance and historical homage. Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday announced the change, inspired by the legendary poet Rabindranath Tagore. Tagore referred this area as “Sribhumi” over a century ago, translating to “the land of Goddess Lakshmi.” He also gave reference that the new name was an inspiration of Rabindranath Tagore’s description of the modern-day Karimganj.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared the news on X, by emphasizing that this new name honors Tagore’s vision and fulfills a long-held aspiration of the local community. “More than 100 years ago, Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore described the modern-day Karimganj District as ‘Sribhumi’—a term that resonates with the spirit of our land,” he noted. “Today, the Assam Cabinet has taken a significant step to revive this historical identity.” He shared the poster and said his government wants to restore the old glory of Assam’s southernmost district.
The chief minister’s announcement was accompanied by a poster. The poster was seen highlighting the government’s commitment of restoring the cultural significance of Assam’s southernmost district. The poster asserts that renaming Karimganj to Sribhumi reflects the hopes and dreams of its residents. This signals a new era of cultural pride. He furthermore said that the decision will reflect the expectations and aspirations of the people of the district.
“We are gradually changing the names of places that lack historical mentions or dictionary meanings,” he stated during an interview with India Today NE.

He clarified on the recent naming of Kalapahar and stated that, “The term ‘Kalapahar’ doesn’t appear in either Assamese or Bengali dictionaries, nor does ‘Karimganj’. He further stated that the place names are typically rooted in linguistic meaning, and many such names have already been revised, including several villages like Bhasoni Chowk in Barpeta,”
With this latest renaming, of Assam’s Karimganj to Sribhumi. The Assam government aims not only to preserve its rich heritage.
