Legendary Singer SP Balasubrahmanyam Dies Aged 74

Legendary playback singer, S.P. Balasubrahmanyam passes away today at 1:04 pm in Chennai's hospital at 74 after admitting for COVID-19 treatment.

The year 2020, is bringing worst news ever since the start. Now, popularly known as SBP left us for heavenly abode. Reportedly, Balasubrahmanyam was hospitalised on 5th August at MGM Healthcare after testing positive for COVID-19. Although he did well initially, yet it took a turn for the worse and was put on a ventilator and ECMO support.
On September 7, he tested negative for COVID-19 but continued to be on ventilator support.

S P Balasubrahmanyam was the recipient inner of six National Awards. He gave us 40,000 songs in 16 languages. He worked extensively for Ilaiyaraaja, A R Rahman and other composers. In the Hindi film industry, he sang for Salman Khan in several films. He was also an actor, producer and voice actor. SPB was a recipient of the Padma Shri and the Padma Bhushan.

S.P Balasubrahmanyam was also a voice-over artist. He was the voice-over artist for actor Kamal Hassan, whenever the latter’s Tamil movies were dubbed in Telugu. He also was an admiring character actor, gained an appreciation for his applauding performances in films like Manathil Uruthi Vendum, Thiruda Thiruda, Kadhalan, Minsara Kanavu, and Moone Moonu Varthai. He also played the leads in films like Keladi Kanmani and Sigaram.

Social media is flooded with tributes as soon as the news of the celebrated singer’s demise came out. His collaborators including AR Rahman and Kamal Hassan too tweeted on their offical handles, thereby paying condolences to the family.

Besides that, President Ramnath Kovind tweeted that, In the passing of music legend SP Balasubrahmanyam Indian music has lost one of its most melodious voices. Called ‘Paadum Nila’ or ‘Singing Moon’ by his countless fans, he was honoured with Padma Bhushan and many National Awards. Condolences to his family, friends and admirers. Tributes were also paid by H D Deve Gowda, DK Shiva Kumar and Khushbu Sundar as well as Hema Malini.
