93-year-old woman from Assam defeats Coronavirus and comes out triumphant

Assam health minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma congratulated the 93-year-old woman for putting up a brave fight and defeating Coronavirus.

A 93-year-old woman from Assam’s capital city Guwahati become a wellspring of motivation for all Coronavirus patients as she defeated the virus and came out triumphant. Jibini Devi Baid, a nonagenarian, crushed the virus in spite of her old age. She was released from Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on Thursday and officials confirmed that she ”firmly defeated coronavirus.”

Appreciating the strength and triumph of the woman, Assam health minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted, “At times, we get opportunity to smile amid adversity too! Guwahati’s 93-yr-old Mrs Jibini Devi Baid was discharged from GMCH after having firmly defeated #coronavirus. An incredible story also of the competence of our doctors who handled this delicate case with finest precision.”

On 11 March 2020, WHO declared Novel Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) outbreak as a pandemic and reiterated the call for countries to take immediate actions and scale up response to treat, detect and reduce transmission to save people’s lives.

India currently has the largest number of confirmed cases in Asia and has the third highest number of confirmed cases in the world after the United States and Brazil with the number of total confirmed cases breaching the 100,000 mark on 19 May and 200,000 on 3 June.

India’s fatality rate is relatively lower at 2.80%, against the global 4.7%, as of 6 July. Six cities account for around half of all reported cases in the country – Mumbai, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Pune and Kolkata.

On March 22, India observed a 14-hour voluntary public curfew at the instance of the prime minister Narendra Modi. It was followed by mandatory lockdowns in in all major cities. Further, on March 24, the Prime Minister ordered a nationwide lockdown for 21 days, affecting 1.3 billion population of India.

On April 14, the PM extended the nationwide lockdown till May 3, which was followed by two-week extensions with substantial relaxations. From 1 June, the Government started unlocking the country barring containment zones in three unlock phases.
