AIIMS doctor dies after jumping off 10th floor of his hostel

AIIMS Psychiatrist: A 25-year-old doctor at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi lost the battle of life and committed suicide on Friday evening by jumping off the tenth floor of the hostel. Dr Anurag Kumar was a junior resident at the department of psychiatry. Kumar took this extreme step around 5:00 PM and jumped to death, said Atul Kumar Thakur (DCP south). The doctor’s colleagues saw him jump and informed the officials about the same. Anurag was immediately rushed to ICU where he succumbed to the injuries. He took his last breath at around 7:55 PM.

Reportedly, no suicide note has been recovered, though the police have found his mobile phone from the 10th floor. Police are scanning through the phone to find the possible reasons behind the suicide. Sources revealed that he was battling mental health and was undergoing treatment for depression. In his blog post, Anurag has opened up how a psychiatrist himself, was diagnosed with a “severe depressive episode”.

In his blog post, he talked about suicidal thoughts and all the available options to commit suicide. Read below what he wrote in his blog post titled, ” A psychiatry trainee’s struggle with depression”. In February, I lost all hopes and started looking for suicide options. I considered jumping from the tenth floor of my hostel but was too afraid of residual paralysis if I survived. I am overweight, and hanging would have been difficult with the fragile hostel fan.

Finally, I stumbled across a website that was providing bulk quantity poison. My friend got me admitted to the same ward where I was working on 15th Feb. I was discharged on 22nd February and was advised to recover at home. Initial few days were good, but I again deteriorated and bought shaving blades to cut my carotid on 2nd March when I got admitted again only to be discharged 45 days later. After being rescued a couple of times, he finally decided to choose the first option and jumped off the 10th floor. That same 10th floor, which he has mentioned his blogs.

The incident again highlights the importance of mental health. From Sushant since Rajput, Preksha Mehta, Manmeet Grewal, and Siya Kakkar to Anurag Kumar, we have lost gems in all departments due to depression. Its high time that people should start working on their mental health. Always remember, “ suicide is not an option, depression can be treated”. Stay positive, stay safe.
