Assam floods: Prince William Writes to Kaziranga National Park director expressing concern for the animals

Assam Floods: Prince William wrote a letter to the director of Kaziranga National Park expressing concern for the animals during Assam floods.

Assam floods: Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge, has written to the Kaziranga National Park (KNP) Director, P. Sivakumar, about the harm caused to the national park during the 2020 Assam floods.

In the letter to the director, Prince William spoke fondly of his and the Duchess of Cambridge, Catherine’s visit to the Kaziranga National Park in April 2016 and offered their condolences.

“We have the happiest memories of our visit to Kaziranga in April 2016 and are shocked by what has happened. The deaths of so many animals, including one-horned rhino, is deeply upsetting. We know from our visit how dedicated all the staff in Kaziranga are in caring for the Park’s wildlife, and can only begin to imagine what a difficult time this must be,” the letter read.

Prince William went on to say in the letter that both he and Catherine appreciated the park official’s efforts to rescue the animals and that such a catastrophe atop the Covid-19 pandemic is “deeply

Flood in various pieces of Assam immersed enormous wraps of land in Kaziranga National Park, a World Heritage site, murdering in any event 51 wild creatures however 102 creatures have been saved, authorities said. While Assam continues to be inundated with the death toll from floods in the state rising to 87 on Tuesday, flooding in the neighbouring state of Meghalaya’s West Garo Hills district have claimed the lives of five people in the past week alone.

On July 15, four children (three five-year-olds and one six-year-old) drowned in floodwaters in Tikrikilla village, followed by an 18-year-old woman in Demdema village the next day. The state government has announced compensation of Rs 4 lakh each to the families of the deceased.

“Saddened to see 5 lives lost because of the floods in #GaroHills. Govt has released an ex gratia amount of Rs. 4 Lakhs each to the next of kin of the deceased. We are doing everything to ensure the safety of our citizens during this time. Our condolences to the bereaved families,” tweeted Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma
