The Central Government has sanctioned RS 944.8 crore to Tamil Nadu to aid in relief efforts following Cyclone Fengal. This amount is released in two installments as part of the central share from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF).
Government support comes under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the guidance of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Both the ministers have expressed a solidarity on the hardships faced by the public.
The financial aid will assist Tamil Nadu in providing relief to those affected by Cyclone Fengal. An Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) has been dispatched to assess the damage in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Once their evaluation is complete, additional support from the National Disaster Response Fund will be allocated following the established procedures.
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has approved the release of RS 944.8 crore to the Tamil Nadu government. Moreover both the installments of central share are from the SDRF to help the state in providing relief assistance to people affected by cyclone Fengal. Cyclone Fengal struck Tamil Nadu on November 30.

To date, central government has already released over RS 21,718 crore to 28 states in 2024. This includes RS 14,878 crore from SDRF, RS 4,808 crore from NDRF, RS 1,385 crore from the State Disaster Mitigation Fund (SDMF), and RS 646 crore from the National Disaster Mitigation Fund (NDMF). The government has also provided logistical support. This is deploying the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams, Army personnel, and Air Force assistance to flood- and cyclone-hit regions.
Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister, MK Stalin, in his letter to the Centre, emphasized the scale of the devastation caused by Cyclone Fengal. In his letter he described it as “unprecedented.” He appealed to Prime Minister Modi for an immediate interim relief of RS 2,000 crore from the NDRF. Stalin highlighted that over 69 lakh families and 1.5 crore individuals in northern Tamil Nadu, particularly in districts such as Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai, and Kallakurichi, were severely impacted by the disaster. Initial state assessments estimate that RS 2,475 crore is needed for temporary restoration efforts.
Stalin stated that despite the state’s efforts. The magnitude of the disaster had overwhelmed Tamil Nadu’s resources. Furthermore an urgent financial aid is necessary to address the consequences of the calamity.
