Himachal Pradesh Announces 180 Days Maternity Leave For Women Home Guards

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced 180 days of maternity leave for women Home Guards and a hike in daily allowances for out-of-state deployment from Rs 60 to Rs. 500 during the 62nd State-Level Raising Day of Himachal Pradesh Home Guards and Civil Defence. The minister also pledged to fill 700 vacant positions, enhancing emergency response capabilities, according to reports. This marks a significant step towards improving their working conditions in Himachal Pradesh.

During the event, CM also announced the establishment of drone stations at all district headquarters. These drone stations will help in improving disaster management capabilities as well. He also revealed that a new landline number will be introduced at the State Disaster Response Force Control Room for emergency communication. Several efforts have been made to modernize the SDRF. This will help to include equipping force with advanced drones capable of lifting heavier loads enhancing its operational capacity. Moreover, funds will be allocated for construction of new infrastructure for the SDRF. This includes headquarters in Palampur and a campus for the Kangra Unit, as well as improving communication systems.

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Also Highlighted Outstanding Efforts Of Home Guards

A key highlight of the event was a parade led by Parade Commander Vinay Kumar, with 17 contingents participating. Notably, a women’s contingent was led by Platoon Commander Lata Rahi. The parade also featured demonstrations of disaster management techniques focused on “Surakshit Himachal.” The Home Guard Jawans’ Battle March Past and a musical performance by the Home Guard band added to the celebrations.

The CM commended the bravery and dedication of the Home Guards, Fire Department personnel, and SDRF during the devastating monsoon disaster of the previous year. This incident resulted in the loss of over 500 lives and displaced more than 15,000 people. Highlighting the government’s commitment to disaster preparedness. The CM also announced plans to train one per cent of the state’s population as Civil Defence volunteers over the next five years.

The Chief Minister also highlighted the outstanding efforts of the Home Guards over the past decade. As per reports, nearly 31,000 were rescued and relief operations were carried out, saving 3,600 lives and protecting property worth over RS 10,000 crore was done. He emphasized the ongoing improvements to SDRF infrastructure and the integration of Home Guards as first responders to natural disasters, aiming for quicker, more effective responses.

For enhancing disaster response readiness, the state government has designated 74 Home Guard company offices and 12 training centers as Disaster Response Centers. In the last two years, four new fire stations have been established in Nadaun, Deha, Indora, and Kotkhai, with plans to create 240 new positions in the Fire Services Department. The government has also approved the procurement of eight new fire vehicles to improve the department’s capabilities. Additionally, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu also inaugurated new Home Guards Department buildings worth RS 15.05 crore.
