India-China Border Tension: The Chinese army opened fire on Indian troops in Ladakh on Monday night and our Indian Army counter-attacked by firing warning shots in retaliation to stop the Chinese PLA from trying to occupy Indian positions. The latest incident of firing between India and China took place at a time when the brigade commanders of both the countries were engaged in talks near the Chushul Moldo BPM post.

China initially claimed Indian soldiers crossed the line of actual control in the western border region on Monday and opened fire as part of a “severe military provocation”, forcing Chinese forces to take “corresponding counter-measures”. The firing incident took place on the heights south of the BPM posts in Chushul where both sides were engaged in a battle and China first fired the shot. After that, the Indian troops pushed them back into their territory by firing warning shots.

Following the firing incident, there was heavy mobilisation of armoured regiments and ground troops in the Chushul area. The provocation was caused by the PLA troops who are looking to gain an edge over the Indian side in the eastern Ladakh sector by occupying the tournament heights. The incident could have escalated into a bigger violent face-off but timely intervention by both the sides at a senior level ensured that it did not escalate further.

The relationship between the nuclear-armed neighbours has deteriorated since the last clash which occurred on June 15 in which 20 Indian troops were killed. It is 45 years since shots were last fired at the border, under an agreement barring the use of firearms. The incident is similar which happened at the helmet top in Spangur Heights in the last week of August when the Indian Army pre-empted the Chinese attempts to gain an edge. Soon, the Defence Minister of both countries will meet to ease the tension at the border.
