The door-to-door garbage collection campaign of Lucknow, “Swachhata for Rupees One,” is under review. The district administration carried out surprise inspections at Semnapur Koryani and Pahad Nagar Tikaria on Tuesday. The campaign charges residents just ₹1 per day for waste collection and aims to improve sanitation across rural areas.

Inspection In Semnapur Koryani Of Lucknow

District Magistrate Vishak G inspected Semnapur Koryani, of Lucknow an area which is a home for around 3,000 residents. The village is served by a single e-rickshaw for garbage collection. During the inspection, it was confirmed that the e-rickshaw follows a designated route, tracked via GPS.

The district administration had earlier held a cleanliness audit meeting on February 16 to assess the progress. The DM emphasized tackling illegal garbage dumping on vacant plots. He ordered authorities to issue notices and impose penalties to curb the practice.

Additionally, the DM directed that self-help group (SHG) members, who work as “Swachhata Sakhis” for fee collection, should receive compensation comparable to that of “Vidyut Sakhis.” This move is aimed at boosting community involvement in sanitation efforts.

Issues In Pahad Nagar Tikaria

The inspection also covered Pahad Nagar Tikaria, which serves about 2,725 residents with a single e-rickshaw. Here, the inspection revealed poor maintenance at the resource recovery centre (RRC). Despite a cleanliness audit meeting held on February 23, the garbage segregation process was being carried out in an unsanitary area outside the centre.

The district administration took immediate notice of the issue and instructed the district panchayati raj officer to address the situation. Action was ordered against the sanitation worker responsible for the poor condition.

The inspections have highlighted both positive aspects and areas for improvement in the ongoing sanitation initiative. With the involvement of SHGs and the use of technology, such as GPS tracking, the program aims to make rural areas cleaner and more hygienic. However, challenges like illegal dumping and unsanitary practices at recovery centres need to be dealt with swiftly to ensure the success of the program.

Officials remain committed to improving waste management practices and strengthening community involvement in these efforts. Regular inspections and audits are expected to continue to keep the initiative on track.
