Roger Janke, a man who hails from California, threw rocks at a Korean mom’s car while she was driving in the suburbs of Los Angeles in Fullerton and damaged the windscreen and bumper of the woman’s Tesla.
The woman and her 6-year-old son were petrified by the sudden attack and drove to a nearby park and dialed 911 for help. The police rushed to the woman’s rescue and nabbed Janke, charging him with a hate crime, the latest in a chain of attacks against Asian-Americans.
The 28-year-old Roger Janke, faces multiple charges that includes violating civil rights, throwing substance at a moving vehicle and is charged with a hate crime, as per the Orange County District Attorney’s office.
District Attorney Todd Spitzer said in a statement that the court will use the full extent of the law to punish Janke and added that there’s ”no room for hate” in Fullerton. ”I refuse to tolerate hate in Orange County.”
A woman and her child should be able to drive down the street without worrying about being attacked because of the colour of their skin,” the statement read.
However, Janke, pleaded not guilty to the crime and in his statement to the police said that the Koreans in the locality ”are trying to control” him. If pleaded guilty, the man would face a maximum sentence of six years in prison.
