Ellen DeGeneres came under criticism recently over allegations of her being ‘Cold and Mean’ towards her employees.

In an anonymous revelation to Buzzfeed News, 11 employees (10 former and 1 current) spoke about the toxic workplace experience they endured during their tenure with The Ellen DeGeneres talk show which gained more popularity ever since its inception in 2003.

The popular talk show has been credited with widespread acclaim and has won 61 Daytime Emmy awards and is one of the most subscribed entertainment channel on YouTube. The show which enunciates ”being kind” built a reputation of its own with a huge fanbase known famously for its surprise generous giveaways to the audience during the show.

However, in real life, the show contradicts itself and has a different story of toxic work culture as employees speak out the harassment they faced while working at the show.

With the ongoing rumours buzzing around the internet that the popular show host Elen DeGeneres is ”mean” was supercharged by a tweet from Kevin T Potter which got thousands of retweets and responses from former staff of the show and triggered a fresh whirlwind of speculations.

The allegations published on Buzzfeed, talks about the employees negative experiences from the management, right from being fired for taking personal leaves when most needed or at times of them experiencing racism.

An employee told the publication that there has been rumours of Ellen being mean and that is currently in focus but that is not the problem. Instead he says, the focus should be on how the management is encouraging ”workplace bullying.”

In another statement, a bodyguard who worked with Ellen told that she is ”cold and demeaning” which resulted in an all staff meeting over Zoom. According to an employee who spoke to Buzzfeed, said that they adapt all possible ways to ensure the production of the show goes smooth and win accolades. They know exactly which pulls the attention of the people, what gets them the best number of likes which is positive. However in an ironical gesture he said, ”the reality is otherwise.”

In what seems to be the leading points to these claims was the statement of a black female employee who told that she had experienced racism and was subject to microaggression and when she sought support for the discriminating, she was distanced by other employees.

Another employee stated of being warned for raising funds for medical expenses from GofundMe campaign citing it would tarnish DeGeneres’s image.

In response to the allegations made, a spokesperson stated to the publication that they were ”heartbroken and took it seriously” and they felt ”deeply touched” to know of even any of the members of their production family have had negative experience.

The new stir of employees voicing out publicly came in the wake of varied reports of employees expressing their outrage and being distressed for the lack of communication from the show producers during the Coronavirus pandemic.
