As the name suggests, it is the fourth day in the month of Bhadrapada, Shukla Paksa, meaning the waxing phase of the Lunar cycle. Another name of Lord Ganesha is Vighnaharta, who will blow away all negativity and sufferings from our lives. During this 10-day long festival, people bring Ganpati idols home and offer God his favourite dishes, pray and welcome him with great fervour.

According to Vastu shastra, the best direction to place Ganpati idol is in the East or North-East. Note, never place the idol ever in the South direction or against a wall attached to a toilet. Secondly, never place a mandir or Ganpati idol under a staircase. It is almost like walking upon the head of God every time you climb those stairs.
