Complete details of the New Education Policy 2020 explained! India to be the next global knowledge hub says PM Narendra Modi

New Education Policy 2020 will position India to be the next knowledge hub.

New education policy 2020 has brought forth transformational reforms in the school and higher education sector in the country. On July 29, Union Ministers for Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Prakash Javadekar and Human Resource Development (HRD) Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank launched the New Education Policy at 4 pm yesterday.

This policy aims for major changes including vocational education in the curriculum. It has also invited top foreign universities to set up their campus in India. In the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, the session will begin in September-October. Hence, the government aims to introduce this policy before the beginning of this new academic session.

Key Highlights of the reform in the Education Policy includes-
1. By 2040, all higher education institutions (HEIs) shall aim to become multidisciplinary institutions which aim to set this institution in or near every district by the year 2020. A multidisciplinary institution will offer undergraduate and graduate programmes with high quality research based studies and engaging community based teachings. Through this, students of arts and humanities will be able to learn more science.

2. New National Curriculum framework for ECE, School, teachers and adult education.

3. Board examination will be low stake based on Knowledge Application.

4. 360 degree holistic development of children.

5. tracking student progress for achieving learning outcomes.

6. National assessment centre will be ‘Parakh’.

7. National Professional standards for teachers (NPSI).

8. Digital learning and book promotion policy will apply.

9. Transparent online and self disclosure for public oversight and accountability.

10. HRD Ministry to be renamed as the Education Ministry.

11. The Education Ministry will constitute a National Committee for the Integration of Vocational Education (NCIVE) for important vocational knowledge.

12. NEP has also proposed to set up an Indian Institute of Translation and Interpretation (IITI) to lay emphasis on Sanskrit and other Indian Languages.

13. New Pedagogical and curricular structure in which 10+2 board structure is dropped and 5+3+3+4 will be followed. In this structure upto 5 will be counted under pre-school, 6 to 8 mid school, 8 to 11 high school and 12 onwards graduation. Vocational courses will be available from grade 6 onwards. Students of 8 to 11 can choose their respective subjects. Exam will be held twice in a year: Objective and subjective.

14. Any degree will be of 4 years and all courses will have minor and major. For example an engineering student can opt for Maths and Music. for graduation courses students will get a benefit by the credit system. In this way no year of his studies will be wasted. For each year, students will get credits which he can utilize if he takes breaks in his course and later after a year if he wants to resume with his studies. In any graduation course if the student completes one year, he will be awarded with a certificate, on completing two years, he will be rewarded with diploma and for completing the full course the student will get a degree. in this way multiple entry and exit from any course.

15. All the graduation course feed of all universities will be governed by single authorities.

16. Guidelines for board exams and its curriculum will be decided by NCERT, in consultation with SCERTs, Boards of Assessment (BoAs) and PARAKH.

17. Examination for grade 1 to 8 is to move the children away from rote learning in order to assess core concepts and knowledge, higher order skills and its application in real life situations. The result of school examinations will lead to continuous monitoring and improvement of the schooling system.

18. UGC and AICTE will be merged.

19. E-content will also be available in regional languages apart from English and Hindi.

20. Financial autonomy will be given to over 45000 affiliated colleges in our country on the basis of their status and accreditation.

21. Medium of instruction for at least grade 5, preferably till grade 8 and beyond, will be the home language/ mother tongue/ regional language.

As per the leading news agency, “Report cards will be a comprehensive based report on skills and capabilities instead of just marks and statements,” as quoted by the Government of India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, “I wholeheartedly welcome approval of the National Education Policy 2020! This was a long due and much awaited reform in the education sector, which will transform millions of lives in the times to come!”
