Former President Pranab Mukherjee’s Health Condition Critical After Undergoing Surgery

Pranab Mukherjee was admitted on Sunday afternoon and had also confirmed tested positive for COVID 19. He continues to remain critical after the surgery according to sources.

Pranab Mukherjee's condition worsens

Former president, Pranab Mukherjee underwent a brain clot surgery and continues to be on ventilator support as he remains critical according to sources from Army Research and Referral Hospital. The sources at the hospital have confirmed in a statement released on Monday.

Pranab Mukherjee was admitted to R&R hospital on Sunday afternoon. He had tweeted and confirmed that he had been tested positive for COVID 19 and urged everyone who came into contact in the past week to self isolate themselves.

He underwent a ‘life-saving surgery’ at the hospital to remove brain clot and continues to remain critical post the surgery. Responding to the tweet from Pranab Mukherjee, many top leaders have wished him a speedy recovery.

The official twitter handle from Rastrapathi Bhavan has confirmed that President Ram Nath Kovind has spoken to Mr Mukherjee’s daughter, Sharmista Mukherjee and enquired of his health.

In a tweet, Mukherjee’s son tweeted ‘He wishes his father a speedy recovery and appeal to all countrymen to pray for him’. Sources also confirm that defence minister, Rajnath Singh had visited the hospital and enquired of his health.

According to sources at Army (Research and Referral Hospital) Mukherjee has been put on ventilator support as it is required a few hours after the surgery. They further confirmed that the ventilator support would have been weaned off had Mr Mukherjee was not tested positive for COVID 19 and the next few hours after the surgery is going to be critical.

Pranab Mukherjee, who served as president of India between 2012 until 2017 is a prolific leader and a scholar who has authored books on economy and nation-building. He has been associated with Indian National Congress and had held several ministries portfolio before elected as president of India.

He started his political career in 1969 when former Indian prime minister, elected him to Rajya Sabha. In his career spanning five decades, he had served as Union Finance Minister and also held the portfolio defense, external affairs and finance. He has been awarded the Bharath Ratna in 2019.
