Government directs stocking of LPG in Kashmir for two months

Jammu & Kashmir: The Government of Jammu and Kashmir has ordered to stock essentials such as LPG cylinders and vacating of school buildings for armed forces in Ganderbal district that connects Kargil with Kashmir has sparked speculations in the valley, especially in the wake of India-China face-off, with the former CM Omar Abdullah questioning the need for such orders by the J&K government.

On June 27 the director of the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department in Kashmir issued an order, which cited an advisor to Jammu and Kashmir Lt Governor GC Murmu has passed directions in a meeting on June 23 “to ensure sufficient stock of LPG in the valley as the same gets affected due to closure of the National Highway on account of frequent landslides”.

The order was described as the “matter most urgent”, the director asked oil marketing companies to ensure the sufficient stock of the essentials available in the valley which can last up to two months both at bottling plants as well as godowns.

Similar exercises are usually carried during the winter period in view of the closure of Jammu-Srinagar highway due to heavy snowfall and landslide, such a build-up of stocking essentials is uncommon in summers.

Omar Abdullah former CM J&K cited another order by SSP Ganderbal for making arrangements for central forces and said such orders create fear and panic in the valley and sought an explanation from the administration. “Government orders are creating panic in Kashmir and unfortunately after all the lies and false assurances, last year even if/when the government explains these orders hardly any of us will take the assurances at face value. That said they still need to explain these orders,” Omar tweeted, referring to the centre’s move to revoke Article 370 provisions the August of the previous year.

The order he cited read, the SSP of Ganderbal has requested the district administration to vacate the 16 educational institutions, including ITI buildings, higher secondary and middle secondary schools in the central Kashmir district. The SSP of Ganderbal said that the building was required for the accommodation of central armed paramilitary forces (CAPFs).

“In wake of Shri Amarnath JI Yatra-2020, the necessary arrangements are made for the accommodation of the incoming CAPF companies, therefore it is kindly requested that the institutions for the accommodation of CAPF should be vacated for the period of Yatra,” the SSP said.

Another National conference leader Tanvir Sadiq also sought an explanation from the government, said the people of Kashmir cannot afford to live another year in “fear and uneasiness”. “Its summer so not many landslides. Stock for two months. Matter most urgent. These three points need clarity at the highest level. People of Kashmir can’t afford to live in yet another year of fear and uneasiness,” he wrote on Twitter. The anxiety among the people in Kashmir is nerve breaking.”We hear the jets hovering in the skies on a daily basis for many weeks now. A similar order was passed by the government last year. There is a lot of apprehensions again in the valley,” said Nazeer Ahmad resident of Hawal.

The present situation in the valley has been compared to the past two episodes witnessed last year. Ahead of the operation Balakot inside Pakistan previous year and the revocation of J&K’s special status in August last year, as the government had directed similar orders.
